Semper Fi

Semper fidelis, the Marine Corps pledge of honor, but faithful to what?

In the recent US presidential inauguration, the Marine Honor Guard was required to remove the bolts from their rifles before nearing the Presence.

The Presence recently signed into Executive Order, his own infinite protection, life long, ensuring it also for his predecessor, Bush. A Bill Clinton aide famously described an E.O. as, "Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Pretty cool, huh?"

The Personage is delivered to photo op's in the newly tricked out presidential limousine. Rumor has it, that those who guard it call it the "narcissist-mobile."

I woke thinking about leaders whose experience of nature encompasses tunnels, cubicles, golf courses and windowless offices. Rabble wielding placards held at bay.

I thought about a government originally imagined as held in check by three branches, a balance of powers, peopled by those who knew food-growing farm life, seasons of plenty and crop failure, dawn on horseback, the cold away from firelight and storms.

Power is now wielded against populace by those who think food comes from Monsanto.

Faithful to what? Narcissism may have crossed a line.
